No person may be denied admission to any public school or be denied participation in, be denied the benefits of or be discriminated against in any curricular, extracurricular, pupil services, recreational or other program or activity because of the person's sex, race, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability.

OUR CORE VALUES: A RISING TIDE

TRUST

When we trust and equip students with the skills to make good decisions about their learning, and support them through missteps, they become successful, independent decision makers. Conversely, when adults always tell students what to do, students become dependent on the adults to make decisions and are at a disadvantage when faced with decision-making outside of school. At Pathways High we trust and EMPOWER students to own their learning, in a supported, caring environment. The result: Pathways High students become engaged citizens who use their agency to solve real world problems, both inside and outside the classroom.

HOW WE RIDE THE TIDE

  • Student voice is sought out and supported in all aspects of the school through quarterly culture surveys, staff open door practices, and co-development of seminars

  • Students frequently leave the school for IMPACT, dual enrollment, and other field experiences

INTERCONNECTEDNESS

Personal and professional relationships are the dominant factors contributing to success and happiness in career and life. Connections and networks can open doors to limitless opportunities. At Pathways High we are committed to fostering the development of relationship building and networking skills for all members of our extended community. As globalization rapidly increases, Pathways High students and staff will have the self-knowledge and relationship building skills to thrive in our interconnected world.

HOW WE RIDE THE TIDE

  • IMPACT experiences, inside and outside of school, enable students to connect with industry/community partners and develop relationship building skills.

  • The Indigo survey provides each student with a detailed knowledge of themselves -- personality, strengths, and motivators.

  • Our Daily Advisory provides opportunities for students to form meaningful connections with peers and his/her advisor.

DIVERSE BY DESIGN

Milwaukee has been called one of the most segregated cities in the U.S.  This is a characteristic Pathways High is intent to reverse. By and large, schools mirror the segregation of the neighborhood in which they are located. Pathways High sought out 2R charter authorization in order to be allowed to enroll students from anywhere in the greater metro Milwaukee region. We are intentionally bringing together young people and adults from wide-ranging communities with diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, cultural, and social identity backgrounds in order to provide broader perspectives with which to formulate, view, and solve real world problems. Together we are better.

HOW WE RIDE THE TIDE

  • We recruit students from Milwaukee County and the four surrounding counties in order to have a student body reflective of the diverse communities across our region.

  • Exploring Perspective is a cornerstone of EMPOWER and we regularly practice this skill in our seminars by valuing the rich diversity of identities at our school.

  • We work to bridge communities both inside and outside of school.

EXCELLENCE THROUGH PURPOSE

In education, the term excellence is used liberally but most would agree its definition lacks clarity or is too narrow to be useful in the real world. Excellence is often defined as high standardized tests scores, GPAs, and 4-year graduation rates.  At Pathways High, we believe this definition is too narrow to encompass the depth and breadth required for excellence in career and life. Also, the limitations of this definition contribute to squandering the talents of too many people who can’t be measured with a “one-size-fits-all” metric. At Pathways High, excellence is determined by assessment of performance on real world projects. Assessment is multi-dimensional and includes teachers, peers, self and authentic audiences, as often as possible. Furthermore, we believe the best way to achieve excellence is through doing work that has purpose and meaning. Excellence is personal. When we connect with the work, there is no stopping us from excelling.  This engagement is what we seek for all our students and staff.

HOW WE RIDE THE TIDE

  • We believe intrinsic motivation drives learning much better than extrinsic motivation.

  • Our students can influence both the content and context of their learning, improving their engagement and drive to excel.

  • We prioritize longer-term outcomes such as success in postsecondary education pathways as opposed to shorter-term ones.

"The growing access to knowledge, information, people, and tools that our students are getting demands a shift in how we think about the work they do in school."
