- Daily Structures | Pathways High
Explore Pathways High's daily structures! Discover our blended learning approach: ALEKS math, interdisciplinary seminars, literacy PUMAs, supportive advisories, and project-focused core blocks. CURRENT STUDENTS DAILY SCHEDULE Daily Schedule at Pathways High Pathways High is a Project-Based High School with consistent class periods every day. The required school hours are from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. We work on a trimester system, with three trimesters in a school year. SEMINARS Students work at their own pace in mixed-grade interdisciplinary, hands-on learning seminars allowing them to pursue credit across multiple standards in multiple topics concurrently. ADVISORY Students are organized into Advisory groups, each led by a teacher and composed of mixed grade levels to foster both learning and relationship-building. Advisory sessions are held once daily to support students in achieving their individual goals. Additionally, students meet one-on-one with their Advisor once a week to receive personalized guidance. GLD GLD or Grade Level Development courses are designed to create time and space for students' unique needs at varying ages. From social and emotional development to project management in underclass years to Defense development and career planning for upperclassmen, this time goes beyond academics to support age-appropriate life skills. Lit./Wellness Block The purpose of our Lit. Wellness Block fosters an understanding of literacy as essential for lifelong learning, empathy, and agency and augments regular literacy instruction by providing additional opportunities to develop reading, discussion, and critical thinking skills. PROJECT BLOCK Students are allotted a dedicated hour each day to work on projects from their seminars. This time is designed for students to develop skills as independent learners and leaders while creating their projects. Initially, all students undergo a project management curriculum to learn how to work independently. Once they complete this training, they can use this time to pursue self-directed projects, collaborating with staff, teachers, and external partners to support them in achieving their goals 25-26 TRIMESTER 2 COLLABORATION FOR STUDENT GROWTH Teachers work collaboratively throughout the school year in order to provide rigorous academics for every student. - Robotics Seminar | Pathways High
Dive into Robotics at Pathways High! Design, build, and compete with robots while exploring real-world applications relevant to Milwaukee's unique location. Earn industry certifications and build your future-ready skills. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS ROBOTICS Robotics Course Description: In this course, students will participate in two robot builds and two side quests. Design, build, and compete with a submersible Remote Operated Vehicle, build and program a land-based robot to compete in specific games, unbuild and design modifications to a prosthetic hand, and design a submersible research ROV based on the SeaFox model. Submersible ROV’s are an important context due to Milwaukee’s unique location at the delta of a large river basin and Lake Michigan. Students who have already taken computer programming or robotics ARE ENCOURAGED to take the course again to learn a new language and to pursue industry certifications. These students will work with the instructor to develop a portfolio demonstrating proficiency or mastery in advanced standards. Meet the dedicated Board members leading Pathways High, committed to supporting our unique Project-Based Learning approach. ABOUT BOARD OF DIRECTORS Julia Burns Julia Burns has over 12 years of business and partnership development experience at telecommunications, software and technology consulting companies in Boston, Milwaukee and Chicago. Having work experiences that span large multinational corporations to smaller start-ups, Julia excels in entrepreneurial environments where collaboration and team building are essential to success. While at Platinum Technology, Julia managed the global strategic partnership with Hewlett-Packard and traveled extensively to grow the joint revenues of the two sales organizations. Since 2003, Julia focused her time and talents on raising, together with her husband, five children and volunteering extensively in their schools. Julia has a BA in Economics from Boston University College of Arts and Science and an MBA from Boston University Questrom Graduate School of Business. Community Volunteer Co-founder & Board President David B. Schulz Shareholder & Chair of Banking and Finance Practice, Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren David Schulz is a shareholder and chair of Reinhart’s Banking and Finance Practice, a member of the firm’s Corporate Law Practice, as well as a member of Reinhart’s Board of Directors. David’s practice is primarily devoted to commercial and public finance matters including structuring transactions using New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC), Historic Tax Credits (HTC), and other federal and state tax credits. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, David is highly involved with the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern Wisconsin where he serves as a Board Member and Treasurer. In addition to his involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association, David is a member of the Advisory Council of Rebuilding Together Greater Milwaukee. Notably, David along with numerous members of Reinhart’s Banking and Finance and Bankruptcy Practices volunteered their time to partner with Rebuilding Together to renovate a home on the north side of Milwaukee. David is also a member of the Wauwatosa Community Development Authority where he applies his project financing expertise to assist with re-development matters. Board Treasurer Kurt Owens has been a pastor in Milwaukee since 2005. He has 20 years of accounting and leadership experience with a bachelor’s in business and an MA in Christian ministry. Kurt is in the final stages of completing his educational doctorate. He has been a resident of Milwaukee’s central city his entire life and has seen it thrive and would like to see the city return to its full capacity. He recognizes the people in the city who have struggled for positive change through the years, and wants to be a part of working towards change today. Kurt Owens President and Founder, Bridge Builders Board Emeritus Mary Kellner Mary Kellner is the President of the Kelben Foundation, a family foundation that has funded hundreds of scholarships for needy high school seniors, endowments for Professorships, and many other Educational and Health initiatives. In addition to the huge impact to the Milwaukee area that her role with the Kelben Foundation provides, she is an eminent advocate for educational reform in Milwaukee. Mary brings a wealth of knowledge with her based on her vast experience in numerous organizations including Next Door Foundation, Schools That Can Milwaukee, Milwaukee College Prep, Nehemiah Project, I Have a Dream program and many others. Mary has a strong academic background to support her advocacy and philanthropy. Mary graduated from UW-Madison with a BA in Elementary Education. She later received her MS in Educational Psychology and Guidance from UW-Milwaukee. As both an elementary school teacher and later guidance counselor, Mary gained a front line understanding of the needs of education. Mary received her terminal degree, an Ed.D in Education, from Cardinal Stritch. Her research documented some of the cultural aspects of an effective MPS elementary school. Mary continues her involvement with these three educational institutions in a multitude of ways which align with her intense commitment to addressing the achievement gap that Milwaukee’s children are facing in addition to other educational disparities that exist in our community. President, Kelben Foundation Board Member Chad Bauman Chad Bauman is the Executive Director of Milwaukee Repertory Theater, an $11 million, not-for-profit regional theater operating a three theater complex with 200,000 annual patrons. He is responsible for the administration functions of the company including marketing, fundraising, finance, general management, facilities, education and food/beverage. Prior, he was the Associate Executive Director of Arena Stage, the Director of Marketing and Membership of the Smithsonian Institution, and the Director of Marketing & Communications for Americans for the Arts. In addition to being an administrator, he is a passionate teacher, dedicated volunteer and an in-demand speaker and consultant. He designed and launched the graduate Technology in Arts Management program at American University, and has taught in the graduate Arts Administration program at Drexel University and the M.F.A. Producing program at CalArts. Nationally known for his expertise in business planning, strategy and marketing, he has been featured in The New York Times, ArtsJournal, TheaterMania, Drama Biz Magazine, Stage Directions Magazine, the Washington City Paper, and others. In 2012, The Washington Post declared him the “guru of dynamic pricing,” and for three consecutive years starting in 2011, Washington Life Magazine honored him as one of the most influential under-40 leaders in Washington, DC. In 2016, the Milwaukee Business Journal also recognized him as one of the top 40 leaders under 40 in Southeastern Wisconsin. As a speaker and consultant, he has worked with the Pew Charitable Trust, Carnegie Hall, the EmcArts Innovation Lab, The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, City Theatre Company, San Francisco Foundation, Delaware Division of the Arts, Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, St. Louis Regional Arts Commission, ArtsMidwest, and the Arts & Business Council among others. Executive Director, Milwaukee Repertory Theater Board Vice President James Hischke James Hischke is the Director of Consulting Services at Codeworks, a technology services and staffing provider. James brings over 20 years of experience in various leadership roles across business and technology. He builds high-performing lean/agile teams that solve business problems and advance business strategy, while ensuring the strengths of each individual are fully leveraged. After starting his career as a Software Engineer for Strong Financial, he excelled in various roles during an 18+ year career at Northwestern Mutual that included project/program management, lean/agile IT transformation, IT vendor management, tech talent/workforce development, and lean process improvement. In addition, he was instrumental in the work that led to the creation of the Milwaukee Tech Hub Coalition and all of Northwestern Mutual's work related to growing and diversifying tech talent in Milwaukee. In addition to the Pathways High Board of Directors, he serves on the Advisory Board for i.c.stars Milwaukee and is a member of the TechUnited (United Way) Advisory Council. James and his wife Beth have 4 children and live in Muskego. He spends his time outside of work traveling with his family, playing basketball, coaching youth sports, golfing, mountain biking, fishing, and enjoying just about any other activity someone wants to throw his way. Director of Consulting Services, Codeworks Board Secretary Steven Broadway Steven is the Business Development Executive at LearningMate, a technology company specializing in AI, digital transformation, and innovative teaching and learning solutions. With over 11 years of experience in the education sector, Steven excels in partnership development, student support, and community engagement across K-12 and higher education. Previously, he served as the Assistant Director of Partnerships at Bitwise Industries, focusing on building tech economies in underserved cities. Steven has also worked at College Pads and the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he managed partnerships, recruitment, and outreach. An alumnus of the African American Leadership Program, Steven is committed to making Milwaukee a prime destination for professionals. He holds a master's degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Business Development Executive, LearningMate Board Member Antony D'Cruz serves as Chief Information Officer at HSA Bank, where he delivers digital transformation and technology capabilities to support the Bank’s objectives of delivering meaningful health and wealth outcomes to its clients. Antony joined HSA Bank in 2018, bringing with him more than 25 years of global IT leadership experience. He previously worked at Johnson Controls for 15 years, where he held various IT leadership positions in North America and Asia. In his leadership roles, Antony had led business and technology transformation programs, and built teams to run IT at scale. He holds an MBA from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in computer sciences from Western Michigan University. Antony is part of Technology United, a donor network group of the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County, focused on bridging the technology divide in our local community. Antony also volunteers with the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, serving as co-chair of the Spotlight committee and on the Development committee. General Middle School Donors What is Pathways High? We are a free, public UW-Milwaukee charter high school serving 9th-12th grade students around the greater Milwaukee region, including but not limited to students from Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, and Racine counties. We offer innovative and personalized education through a Project-Based learning model. Who attends Pathways High? At Pathway High, we welcome students from diverse backgrounds, embracing unique abilities, religions, identities, and creeds. An ideal Pathway High student is someone who is curious, driven, and dedicated to exploring their future college or career path. We create a community where everyone's individuality is valued and hold space for students to pursue their dreams actively with passion and commitment. Who can apply to Pathways High? As a tuition-free, public charter school, any student can apply to Pathways High's middle and high school. What are the main differences between Pathways High and conventional schools? 1) Project based Learning Model 2) Personalized Education 3) IMPACT experiences in every Seminar: Field trip, frequent guest speakers, networking, and internship opportunities. 4) Real-World Curriculum 5) IMPACT Year: This is an optional additional year where Pathways High will pay for 12 credits of a college, and provide support.. Students can choose to attend UW-Milwaukee or MATC. How many students attend Pathways High? Pathways High was designed to be small school where every student is known and valued. Personalized, project-based learning thrives in schools with 100 - 200 students so Pathways High stays within that range. Does Pathways High provide transportation? Pathways High Middle School does not provide transportation. However, the school is conveniently located on Wisconsin Avenue, a major public bus corridor, making it accessible to students across the city. Families are responsible for arranging daily transportation to and from school. Does Pathways High provide special education services? Yes, as a public school, Pathways High provides special education services by a certified special education teacher. What is the New Tech Network and what benefits does it provide Pathways High to be in this network? The New Tech Network (NTN) is a national network of innovative public schools focused on high-quality project-based learning (PBL), student engagement, and strong school culture. NTN supports more than 200 schools across 28 states and partners with schools to implement a whole-school approach to teaching and learning. As a member of the New Tech Network, Pathways High Middle School benefits from ongoing professional development and coaching for educators, access to high-quality PBL curriculum resources and assessment tools, and collaboration with a national community of schools committed to continuous improvement. Does Pathways High prepare students for college? Yes, Pathways High prepares students for college and beyond through our curricula with additional future readiness credits that students can obtain. Student may earn college credits before graduation by participating in dual and concurrent enrollment options directly through UW-Milwaukee or MATC. Do Pathways High students take state tests? ACT? Pathways High complies with all state-mandated testing, including the Forward exam, ACT ASPIRE, and ACT. What is a mastery transcript? Similar to a resume, a mastery transcript is a high school transcript that provides a holistic picture of a student’s experiences, academic knowledge, and future-readiness skills acquired throughout high school and the IMPACT Year, if the student pursued an IMPACT Year. Students select the evidence that best demonstrates their diverse capabilities. If a student is interested in a sport, they are encouraged to recruit other students to form a recreational sports team. What extracurriculars or clubs does Pathways High have? Clubs are student-driven and created, only to be assisted by staff at Pathways High. Unleash your inner fashion designer at Pathways High! Collaborate with MIAD professionals, explore Design Thinking, and create wearable art! Develop future-ready creativity and communication skills. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS YOU WEAR IT WELL You Wear It Well Course Description: Are you interested in design, fashion, logos, branding, marketing or printmaking? Would you like to see yourself or your peers wearing your unique designs? If so, this seminar is for you! Students enrolled in 'You Wear it Well' will participate in MIAD’s Future Creatives Program and work alongside professionals in the field in order to gain deeper insight into how aesthetically appealing apparel is developed. We will use the Design Thinking process to solve the question: How can we develop our creative voice using printmaking to create well-crafted artwork/designs that communicate our intended ideas? Participants will have several opportunities to work individually and collaboratively as we develop a suite of wearable designs and printed works of art. Be prepared to give and receive feedback frequently in order to push our designs to the next level! We will use this knowledge to propose our own plans for environmental improvement, beginning with collaborative work on an urban forestry grant and then opening up to individual proposal ideas, with the goal of finding funding sources and convincing funders to support our projects. This page describes the diverse extracurricular opportunities that Pathways High offers. We offer sports, clubs, and theater at our school. EXTRACURRICULARS. At Pathways High, students have the chance to explore opportunities beyond the classroom through our diverse extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and theater. These programs enrich their learning experience and foster personal growth. All offerings are students informed and driven, so students may work together to create new opportunities if they desire. Pathways High Extracurricular Opportunities Sports As a small school, Pathways High partners with outside organizations, such as the Milwaukee Rowing Club, to provide opportunities for participation in competitive sports. If a student is interested in a sport, they are encouraged to recruit other students to form a recreational sports team. Clubs All clubs are entirely student-driven and student-led, offering endless opportunities for creativity, leadership, and exploration! These clubs take place after school and are supported by at least one staff advisor to provide guidance and ensure success. Become a boat builder at Pathways High! Partner with All Hands Boatworks to construct a real wooden boat. Apply math skills, explore design thinking, and gain valuable real-world experience. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS BUILD-A-BOAT Build A Boat Course Description: Do you like to build things? Are you ready to use the Workshop to its fullest potential? In this seminar, a group of students will work with Mr. Sasveld and the partner organization All Hands Boatworks to build a wooden boat with a capacity of 3 persons. Twice a week, All Hands Boatworks will come to Pathways High and work with the students on the physical building of the boat. On the other days of the week, students will work to sharpen their math skills as they relate to the building of the boat. Math concepts like measurement, scale drawing, and geometry will be explored and used to help build the boat. Students have the capacity to earn both mathematical standards and design thinking standards in this seminar co-taught with a partner organization.
