Julia Burns

Julia Burns has over 12 years of business and partnership development experience at telecommunications, software and technology consulting companies in Boston, Milwaukee and Chicago. Having work experiences that span large multinational corporations to smaller start-ups, Julia excels in entrepreneurial environments where collaboration and team building are essential to success. While at Platinum Technology, Julia managed the global strategic partnership with Hewlett-Packard and traveled extensively to grow the joint revenues of the two sales organizations.

Since 2003, Julia focused her time and talents on raising, together with her husband, five children and volunteering extensively in their schools. Julia has a BA in Economics from Boston University College of Arts and Science and an MBA from Boston University Questrom Graduate School of Business.

Dr. Phyllis King
Chief Innovation Strategist, Waukesha County Technical College
Board Member

As the Chief Innovation Strategist at Waukesha County Technical College, Dr. Phyllis King advances innovation at the intersection of education, workforce, and public impact. She provides executive leadership to expand innovation across academic, research, and administrative functions, including the growth of artificial intelligence programs and partnerships spanning education, industry, and government.

 

Previously, as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Vice Provost for Partnerships and Initiatives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, she guided academic and budgetary planning and major initiatives in recruitment, retention, STEM education, academic innovation, and strategic partnerships. Dr. King is internationally recognized for research in data science, ergonomics, public policy, and health systems. She served as an advisor to Singapore’s Ministry of Health and was the Corporate Ergonomist for Kohler Company. She is a Full Professor and holds a Doctorate in Administrative Leadership with specialization in Industrial Engineering.

David Comer

David Comer is the Child Support Administrator with Milwaukee County's Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), serving children and families and expanding his impact at a systems level. He values contributing to DHHS’s "No Wrong Door" approach, connecting families to the services and support they need while strengthening outcomes across Milwaukee County.

Prior to his role at Milwaukee County’s DHHS, David worked for the Milwaukee Health Department for four years as Health Project Supervisor for the Direct Assistance to Dads (DAD) Project and Interim Manager for the Empowering Families of Milwaukee (EFM) Program. David is a transformational and adaptable leader, with a proven record of generating and sustaining relationships, managing projects from concept to completion, designing educational strategies, and coaching individuals to success. He has a M. Ed. in Educational Leadership & Administration from University of Minnesota and a MS, Mental Health Counseling from Mount Mary University.

Mary Kellner

Mary Kellner is the President of the Kelben Foundation, a family foundation that has funded hundreds of scholarships for needy high school seniors, endowments for Professorships, and many other Educational and Health initiatives. In addition to the huge impact to the Milwaukee area that her role with the Kelben Foundation provides, she is an eminent advocate for educational reform in Milwaukee. 

Mary brings a wealth of knowledge with her based on her vast experience in numerous organizations including Next Door Foundation, Schools That Can Milwaukee, Milwaukee College Prep, Nehemiah Project, I Have a Dream program and many others. Mary has a strong academic background to support her advocacy and philanthropy. Mary graduated from UW-Madison with a BA in Elementary Education. She later received her MS in Educational Psychology and Guidance from UW-Milwaukee. As both an elementary school teacher and later guidance counselor, Mary gained a front line understanding of the needs of education. Mary received her terminal degree, an Ed.D in Education, from Cardinal Stritch. Her research documented some of the cultural aspects of an effective MPS elementary school. Mary continues her involvement with these three educational institutions in a multitude of ways which align with her intense commitment to addressing the achievement gap that Milwaukee’s children are facing in addition to other educational disparities that exist in our community.

Chad Bauman

Chad Bauman is the Executive Director of Milwaukee Repertory Theater, an $11 million, not-for-profit regional theater operating a three theater complex with 200,000 annual patrons. He is responsible for the administration functions of the company including marketing, fundraising, finance, general management, facilities, education and food/beverage.

Prior, he was the Associate Executive Director of Arena Stage, the Director of Marketing and Membership of the Smithsonian Institution, and the Director of Marketing & Communications for Americans for the Arts. In addition to being an administrator, he is a passionate teacher, dedicated volunteer and an in-demand speaker and consultant. He designed and launched the graduate Technology in Arts Management program at American University, and has taught in the graduate Arts Administration program at Drexel University and the M.F.A. Producing program at CalArts. Nationally known for his expertise in business planning, strategy and marketing, he has been featured in The New York Times, ArtsJournal, TheaterMania, Drama Biz Magazine, Stage Directions Magazine, the Washington City Paper, and others. In 2012, The Washington Post declared him the “guru of dynamic pricing,” and for three consecutive years starting in 2011, Washington Life Magazine honored him as one of the most influential under-40 leaders in Washington, DC. In 2016, the Milwaukee Business Journal also recognized him as one of the top 40 leaders under 40 in Southeastern Wisconsin. As a speaker and consultant, he has worked with the Pew Charitable Trust, Carnegie Hall, the EmcArts Innovation Lab, The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, City Theatre Company, San Francisco Foundation, Delaware Division of the Arts, Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, St. Louis Regional Arts Commission, ArtsMidwest, and the Arts & Business Council among others.

James Hischke
Director IT, Corporate Functions, Clarios

James Hischke is the Director IT, Corporate Functions at Clarios. In this role, James leads the development of strategies, scoping of investments, implementation of strategic projects and execution of local support to fulfill the needs of the Clarios corporate functions. He and his staff will act as IT partners and digital catalyst with members of the Clarios Executive Leadership Team (ELT) who lead the central functions of finance, HR, legal, supply chain and product development. 

 

James brings over 20 years of experience in various leadership roles across business and technology. He has built and led high-performing lean/agile teams that solve business problems and advance business strategy, while ensuring the strengths of each individual are fully leveraged. After starting his career as a Software Engineer for Strong Financial, he was in various roles during an 18+ year career at Northwestern Mutual that included project/program management, lean/agile IT transformation, IT vendor management, tech talent/workforce development, and lean process improvement. In addition, he was instrumental in the work that led to the creation of the Milwaukee Tech Hub Coalition (non-profit membership organization that serves as a unifying voice for the Milwaukee tech ecosystem) and all of Northwestern Mutual's work related to growing and diversifying tech talent in Milwaukee. James then transitioned into consulting for a couple of years, including leading the Business and Technology Consulting Services practice at Codeworks. In addition to the Pathways High Board of Directors, he serves on the Advisory Board for i.c.stars Milwaukee and is a member of the TechUnited (United Way) Advisory Council.   James and his wife Beth have 4 children and live in Muskego. He spends his time outside of work traveling with his family, playing basketball, coaching youth sports, golfing, mountain biking, fishing, and enjoying just about any other activity someone wants to throw his way.

Steven Broadway

Steven Broadway is the Founder and Principal Consultant of Broadway Legacy Group LLC, a strategic partnerships consultancy serving mission-driven education and nonprofit organizations. With nearly 10 years of experience spanning K-12, higher education, workforce development, and education technology, Steven brings deep expertise in institutional partnership development, community engagement, and program strategy.

 

Steven has held senior partnership roles at organizations including Riipen, LearningMate, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he managed national partner portfolios, led work-based learning initiatives, and built programs from the ground up. He is also a dedicated community leader serving as a mentor to inner city youth and an active volunteer in the Milwaukee area. A proud alumnus of the African American Leadership Program, Steven is committed to advancing access and opportunity for Milwaukee's next generation. He holds a Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Picture of Board Member: Antony d'Cruz

Antony D’Cruz is the chief information officer of MGIC Investment Corporation and MGIC. He joined the company in 2026. Prior to joining MGIC, he served as chief information officer and senior vice president of IT and project management at HSA Bank, a division of Webster Bank, where he led enterprise technology strategy, infrastructure modernization and digital transformation initiatives.

 

Earlier in his career, Mr. D’Cruz held senior technology leadership roles at Johnson Controls. He holds a BS in computer science from Western Michigan University and an MBA in international business and information technology from the University of Michigan.

Ann Knabe
Account Director, Public Relations at BVK
Board Member

Ann Knabe is a dynamic change-agent in public relations. As a senior PR counselor, she believes in the importance of research, strategic and informed outreach, and smart growth. Her 25+ years in military public affairs, national security and international settings complement her civilian work and educational experiences. She describes herself in broad terms as a “relationship-builder,” referring to her extensive work in media relations, internal communications, community relations, international public affairs and government relations.

Ann retired from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel after 36 years. She traveled extensively as she completed tours in Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. When she was back in WI, she taught public relations at UW-Whitewater for 20 years. After retiring from the military four years ago, she joined BVK Advertising as their Director of PR. Her primary client is the advisory tax and assurance firm, Bakertilly. She reached out to me about the new 2026 charitable giving rules that she believes will incentivize those who take the standard tax deduction to donate to 501(c)(3)s like Pathways High. She referenced this Kiplinger’s article. Also, Ann recently stepped down from serving on the USO Board so she said I caught her at a good time. Ann and her husband live in Waukesha. Her daughter Ariana came to Pathways High as a junior after a year at Rufus King and a year of eAchieve on-line school. Ariana thrived at Pathways High and Ann has volunteered at PH on multiple occasions, including speaking about her experience in the military. On our recent call, Ann described the positive PH experiences that shaped Ariana’s learning journey including her internship with Northwestern Mutual and the entrepreneurship opportunity to start a student-run Pumerie coffee shop and cafe at PH. Picture of Board Member: Kurt Owens

Kurt Owens has been a pastor in Milwaukee since 2005.

 

He has 20 years of accounting and leadership experience with a bachelor’s in business and an MA in Christian ministry. Kurt is in the final stages of completing his educational doctorate. He has been a resident of Milwaukee’s central city his entire life and has seen it thrive and would like to see the city return to its full capacity. He recognizes the people in the city who have struggled for positive change through the years, and wants to be a part of working towards change today.
