Explore Pathways High's daily structures! Discover our blended learning approach: ALEKS math, interdisciplinary seminars, literacy PUMAs, supportive advisories, and project-focused core blocks. CURRENT STUDENTS DAILY SCHEDULE Daily Schedule at Pathways High Pathways High is a Project-Based High School with consistent class periods every day. The required school hours are from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. We work on a trimester system, with three trimesters in a school year. SEMINARS Students work at their own pace in mixed-grade interdisciplinary, hands-on learning seminars allowing them to pursue credit across multiple standards in multiple topics concurrently. ADVISORY Students are organized into Advisory groups, each led by a teacher and composed of mixed grade levels to foster both learning and relationship-building. Advisory sessions are held once daily to support students in achieving their individual goals. Additionally, students meet one-on-one with their Advisor once a week to receive personalized guidance. GLD GLD or Grade Level Development courses are designed to create time and space for students' unique needs at varying ages. From social and emotional development to project management in underclass years to Defense development and career planning for upperclassmen, this time goes beyond academics to support age-appropriate life skills. Lit./Wellness Block The purpose of our Lit. Wellness Block fosters an understanding of literacy as essential for lifelong learning, empathy, and agency and augments regular literacy instruction by providing additional opportunities to develop reading, discussion, and critical thinking skills. PROJECT BLOCK Students are allotted a dedicated hour each day to work on projects from their seminars. This time is designed for students to develop skills as independent learners and leaders while creating their projects. Initially, all students undergo a project management curriculum to learn how to work independently. Once they complete this training, they can use this time to pursue self-directed projects, collaborating with staff, teachers, and external partners to support them in achieving their goals 25-26 TRIMESTER 2 COLLABORATION FOR STUDENT GROWTH Teachers work collaboratively throughout the school year in order to provide rigorous academics for every student. - Robotics Seminar | Pathways High
Dive into Robotics at Pathways High! Design, build, and compete with robots while exploring real-world applications relevant to Milwaukee's unique location. Earn industry certifications and build your future-ready skills. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS ROBOTICS Robotics Course Description: In this course, students will participate in two robot builds and two side quests. Design, build, and compete with a submersible Remote Operated Vehicle, build and program a land-based robot to compete in specific games, unbuild and design modifications to a prosthetic hand, and design a submersible research ROV based on the SeaFox model. Submersible ROV’s are an important context due to Milwaukee’s unique location at the delta of a large river basin and Lake Michigan. Students who have already taken computer programming or robotics ARE ENCOURAGED to take the course again to learn a new language and to pursue industry certifications. These students will work with the instructor to develop a portfolio demonstrating proficiency or mastery in advanced standards. "Most Likely to Succeed" Book and documentary. Book Link Documentary Link XQ Super School Challenge $10M nationwide grant to reimagine public high school initiated by Laurene Powell Jobs. Four parents co-founded Pathways High School after being inspired by: Over nine months (October 2015 - July 2016) of the XQ grant process, Pathways High advanced to become a semi-finalist, one of only four schools in Wisconsin and the only one to open. The finalists for the XQ grant were announced in July 2016 before charters are authorized in Wisconsin. The founding team moved forward with a charter application submission to UW-Milwaukee in August 2016 and defended the application before the UWM charter review committee in September 2016. The charter was unanimously approved by the review committee in September 2016, a provisional authorization, and then unanimously approved by the UW Board of Regents in February 2017 making the authorization official. The Pathways High team secured a lease of a building on Vel Phillips and Walnut in April 2017 and began the process to recruit staff and students.

INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS ENTREPRENEURSHIP Entrepreneurship Course Description: Entrepreneurial spirit is strong in young people, and many will appreciate learning the business strategy behind the cost of local goods and services. As teens develop their buying power, it is also important for them to understand how businesses turn a profit and the role consumers play in a company’s success. As market research analysts working for locally owned companies, students will determine the most profitable price point for one of their goods or services. They will gather and analyze data to establish suggested prices and develop and present their reports to the company’s owners. Once we work through consulting the local businesses, students can then turn their entrepreneurial dreams into reality! Students will dive deep into the process of starting their own business. Students will conduct market research, develop a business plan for their product, and run their businesses while tracking sales and costs. These businesses will be created in student teams. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS YOU WEAR IT WELL You Wear It Well Course Description: Are you interested in design, fashion, logos, branding, marketing or printmaking? Would you like to see yourself or your peers wearing your unique designs? If so, this seminar is for you! Students enrolled in 'You Wear it Well' will participate in MIAD’s Future Creatives Program and work alongside professionals in the field in order to gain deeper insight into how aesthetically appealing apparel is developed. We will use the Design Thinking process to solve the question: How can we develop our creative voice using printmaking to create well-crafted artwork/designs that communicate our intended ideas? Participants will have several opportunities to work individually and collaboratively as we develop a suite of wearable designs and printed works of art. Be prepared to give and receive feedback frequently in order to push our designs to the next level! INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS URBAN ECOLOGY Urban Ecology: Proposals For a Better Future Course Description: In this writing seminar, we’re going to learn about urban ecology and what we can do to improve the health of our urban environments. We will use this knowledge to propose our own plans for environmental improvement, beginning with collaborative work on an urban forestry grant and then opening up to individual proposal ideas, with the goal of finding funding sources and convincing funders to support our projects. The writing for this seminar will therefore be focused on technical proposals and proposal arguments. Become a boat builder at Pathways High! Partner with All Hands Boatworks to construct a real wooden boat. Apply math skills, explore design thinking, and gain valuable real-world experience. INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS BUILD-A-BOAT Build A Boat Course Description: Do you like to build things? Are you ready to use the Workshop to its fullest potential? In this seminar, a group of students will work with Mr. Sasveld and the partner organization All Hands Boatworks to build a wooden boat with a capacity of 3 persons. Twice a week, All Hands Boatworks will come to Pathways High and work with the students on the physical building of the boat. On the other days of the week, students will work to sharpen their math skills as they relate to the building of the boat. Math concepts like measurement, scale drawing, and geometry will be explored and used to help build the boat. Students have the capacity to earn both mathematical standards and design thinking standards in this seminar co-taught with a partner organization.
